In the cycle 20 ages, home-brew receivers with the RCA 7360 (sheet-beam
tube) mixer were manufactured and used by enthusiastic amateurs of 50MHz.
7360 is not only low-noise and high-gain but also is strong against overload.
I think they were the reasons to be chosen for the main receiver for DX-ing.
Especially the overload tolerance was really attractive for VHF DX gangs
of 6m. I’ve been interested in how its ability was actually, so I decided
to make the mixer unit for my bench-test. Please see the circuit diagram.
Two systems were evaluated by exchanging the LC tank of RF and Lo-OSC each
other. One is the system which introduces an RF signal to the grid, and
another is the system which puts an RF signal to the deflector electrodes.
When making Focus only the IIP3, the latter system showed excellent data.
The IIP3 also reaches +18dBm at the best point. But the conversion gain
is very low (-10dB), so a combination with low noise amplifier of high-gain
is indispensable for a practical set. On the other hand, the IIP3 of the
former is 10dB inferior but has higher gain than the latter by 15dB. (If
the output impedance is high, the voltage gain would be 17-20dB even on
50MHz.) I'm not measuring it this time, but the noise figure is said to
be less than 6 dB according to a technical document (※). I think this type
is more suitable for an actual receiver as expected. 16Vp-p (6Vrms) was
better for the Lo signal introduced to the deflector electrode. This is
rather higher than the recommended value (10Vp-p) showed on an old ARRL
handbook.
By the way, the output spectrum of 7360 mixer is really clean, which can
be seen on the broadband view in the attached slides. It must be a big
feature that there is significantly little higher IMD (more than 5th) to
be compared with a diode DBM. I could reconfirm the reason why many 7360
fan (including myself) still exist.
