1972年、430MHzSSBの免許が初めてJA0BZC/矢花さんに下りたというニュースは、日本のV/UHFマンにとって大きな刺激となりました。当時は50や144MHzのSSBでさえ、まだまだ一般的ではない時代。自分などはまだAMやFM送信機を作ったり壊したりでしたから、その先進さにショックを受けたことを覚えています。

　矢花さんが免許された時のリグは、終段6939の自作リニアトランスバータでした。ようやく免許が下りたものの相手がいないから、先ずローカル局と144/430MHzのクロスバンドQSOで電波の到達を確認したとのこと。しかしその後、430では別のリグを主に使ったので、このトランスバータでのtwo-way QSOは終ぞ行なわれずじまいでした。歴史遺産ともいえるリグなので、少しもったいない話です。私の430MHzリグ(Transverter-001)修理後の確認QSOをお願いした際、偶々この話を聞き、「それなら是非1st two-way QSOしましょう」、ということになりました。

　当該トランスバータは「オール球」といって良い構成です。6939カソード注入のハイレベルミキサでドライブされた6939の終段出力は1w足らずですが、歪のないきれいな音声でこちらに入感。今でも具合よく動作しているようです。受信コンバータ部はニュービスタを3本使ってのGGアンプ二段＋GGミキサのラインナップ（ARRL VHFマニュアルに載っており、60年代にはポピュラーな構成だった）。動作が安定していたので、ベテランUHFマンの中には80年代に至っても尚これを432EMEに使う局があったほどです。

　私のリグ(Transverter-001)も1WのQRPですが、矢花さんのトランスバータはその電波をFBに受けてくれました。これでようやくイニシャルtwo-way QSOが成立。完成の51年後でした。歴史的なリグ相手にラグチューでき、当局にとっても思い出に残る楽しい記念交信になりました。



In 1972, the news that the first 430 MHz SSB license was granted to JA0BZC was a great stimulus for JA-V/UHF man. At that time, even 50 or 144 MHz SSB was not very common yet.　I remember being shocked at how advanced it was, since I was still building and improvinging AM and FM rig.

When Yabana-san was licensed, his rig was a home-brew linear transverter with a 6939 final. Since he finally got the license but had no other station, he first made a cross-band QSO on 144/430 MHz with a local station to make sure the signal was reachable. However, he mainly used a different rig on 430MHz later, so no two-way QSOs were ever made with this transverter. It is a bit of a disappointment since it’s a heritage rig.

When I asked for a confirmation QSO after I repaired my 430MHz rig, I happened to hear about this story and said, "Then, let's make the 1st two-way QSO". The transverter is made with an almost all vacuum tube configuration. The output power of 6939 final driven by a high-level mixer of cathode injected 6939 is less than 1w, but it came in with a distortion-free, good audio. It seems to work fine even now.

The reception converter section is a line-up of a two-stage GG amplifier + GG mixer using three Nuvistors. (This is in the ARRL VHF manual of the era and was a typical configuration in the 60s.) Its operation was so stable that some veteran UHF operators were still using it for 432EME even into the 1980s.

My rig (Transverter-001) is a 2SC2283 final with 1W output, and Yabana-san's transverter captured my signal very well. This finally established the initial two-way QSO. It was 51 years after its completion. It was a fun and memorable QSO with a historic rig.
