019: Capacitor and “Q” (at 50MHz)

 測定用のコイルは0.2μH(50MHzにてQ=295)に固定。

They say "capacitor is very low loss. Therefore, Q of an LC tank circuit is determined by the inductor." If the LC is for BC band radio receiver use, it is correct indeed. But in case of high frequency like VHF, that becomes doubtful. Attention is needed to a variable capacitor in particular, and you had better know the actual level of capacitor Q accurately. I measured unloaded Q of various kind of capacitors on 50MHz this time.

A coil for measurement was fixed to 0.2μH (Q=295 at 50MHz). A variable or fixed capacitor around 30pF was chosen for the DUT, and I measured the Q at the same frequency after I attached the DUT to my Q meter. And after that, I calculated each capacitor’s own Q based on the measurement result. The categorization of Q is same as HF. They are class A of more than 2000, and class B of 500-1500, and class C of less than 500.

【variable capacitor】
A variable capacitor of unloaded Q above 1000 is preferable for the tank circuit of your final. The split-stator type and the butterfly type are very high Q. I think they should be used for VHF high power amplifier more. (please refer to Amplifier-002 for a use case.)

A Johanson type trimmer capacitor gives us exceptionally high Q. It’s expensive a little, but there is no substitution. I'd like to use it in an input LC resonator of LNA which needs very low loss (please refer to Amplifier-007, and 013).
The Panasonic's ceramic trimmer with Q of class B was better than other brands. If the plate voltage is less than 200 V, it's possible to be used in a vacuum tube transmitter (please refer to Amplifier-016).

【Fixed capacitor】
I found that a mica capacitor of good quality is not always high Q. The Q of small sized “dipped mica” (WV DC100V) wasn't high contrary to expectation. If high Q is necessary, you had better choose a larger WV 500V type of dipped mica.

In the Q point of view, recent small ceramic capacitors are much better than past. If you use them in the usual filter and matching circuit, it isn’t necessary to worry about Q.
A capacitor for RF power couplings is usually argued with ESR and permissible current rather than Q. If the ESR (equivalent series resistance) is very small, it means the capacitor is very High Q.
