014: Variable ATT with stand-by control (for QRP experiment)

This ATT with change-over circuit was manufactured recently to prepare for QRP experiment. It has three types of 50 Ω pads (10dB, 7dB and 3dB) built-in, and it's possible to choose one from seven of combination (0,3,7,10,13,17,20dB) while sending. A small latching relay of Fujitsu (FTR-B3, rated DC4.5V, contact rating 30VDC 1A) was used for the built-in relay. Therefore, not only the battery power consumption is very small, but also the VSWR is good even on VHF. The ATT module and the relay driver circuit are mounted in the main case, and UM3 batteries have been set on another small switch-box to make a stand-by control easy. There are three methods to activate the latching relay.

1. To use the external stand-by control of the transmitter
2. To add DC6V-12V onto the output connector of the transmitter while sending
3. To push the “TEST” switch of the front panel when needed

If the point “A” is grounded, the relay moves to the set position. And then if opened, it goes back to the normal (reset) position.

Each resistor’s wattage is one watt, so the permissible rating power of the ATT is two watts. As small resistor was chosen, the frequency response didn't have to be sacrifice. The data I got on my test bench shows that it can be used even on 144MHz sufficiently.

In case of 1W class transceiver, this ATT can transform itself into a true peanut Whistler in an instant. How much can I reduce the minimum power needed for actual QSO on each band? It's pleasant for a condition rise of cycle 25. Making was in January, 2020.
