The first QST's VHF article appeared in 1924, almost 100 years ago. In other words, the VHF (56 MHz) challenge began not long after the spark transmitter was replaced by the vacuum tube type. I translated the old ARRL VHF Manual Chapter one into Japanese, see literature-002.
