サイクル19の6mバンドで米国本土と本邦初のQSO に成功したJA1AUH後藤さんは、その後VHF～SHFで宇宙通信などにもアクティブだったが、一方で自分のホームグラウンドである50MHzバンドを終生大切にされていた。それを感じさせる一つが、愛用されていたこの自作2toneジェネレータである。
2toneジェネレータは増幅器やミクサなどの二信号特性/IMDを測定するに欠かせないもの。展示品では50.295MHzと50.323MHz(Δ28KHz)の二つの水晶発振器出力を電力合成し、ATTを介して0dBm×2を出力している。内部は教科書にあるようなオーソドックスな構成で、細部には後藤さんらしい拘りも見える。
①各単体発振器には低歪の素子(NECの2SC1426)を使い、段間～出力フィルタ処理は厳重に施す。
②OSC出力には6dB固定パッドを挿入し、コンバイナーに対するリターンロスを12dB以上にキープ。二つの発振ユニット間には高いアイソレーションが求められるから、パワーコンバイナーには高信頼度品を選ぶ(Anzac
TH75)。③同軸ハーネスは良質な二重編組ケーブル（RG55/U、3D2W）を使う。
ジェネレータ出力をつないだスペアナのダイナミックレンジ内(72dB)に3rdオーダーの歪みは見えない。つまり測定系のIPは+36dBm以上。フェーズノイズの少ない高級スペアナなら、恐らくもっと高い値が出るだろう。このSGを使って多くの自作装置を測定/調整されたのだろうと想像するが、これを受け継いで私も時々IMD測定に使わせてもらっている。製作は1980年頃と思われる。

Mr. Goto masanobu /JA1AUH(SK) succeeded in the ever first 6m QSO between
Japan and USA (K6EDX California) in the cycle19. After that He was active
in the space communication like satellite/EME on the VHF/UHF/SHF band since
1970s. On the other hand, he loved 50MHz as his home place all the while.
When this two-tone generator of his own making is seen, more that sense
become strong. Two-tone generator is necessary to measure IMD of the devices
(amplifier, mixer, etc.). Combined signal of a pair of crystal oscillator
(50.295MHz and 50.323MHz) shows clean 0dBm each. The workmanship is so
good that it may be put on a radio textbook. A point is as follows.
1. Low distortion transistor of NEC’s 2SC1426 are used, and the BPFs are
strict.
2. A 6dB pad is inserted each in the output to keep the return loss less
than 12dB.
3. Power combiner is Anzac TH-75 (good isolation and low loss).
4. Coaxial cable is all double shielded type.
As the 3rd order distortion is not seen in the dynamic range of 72dB, the
IP of the measuring system is more than +36dBm. (I believe an expensive
spectrum analyzer with lower phase noise will show us better value.) Now,
I sometimes use this to check IMD of my equipment while thanking him. I
presume Goto-san manufactured this in about 1980.
