　ARRLのVHFマニュアルは、VHF活動の充実を目指す自作アマチュアにとって、一種バイブル的な存在でした。QST誌に登場した記事を中心に体系立てて編集されており、68年と72年にはアップデートが有りましたから、今読み返すと技術の進歩と時代の移り変わりを感じ取ることができます。(表紙の表記が72年版から“-world above 50MHz”になっているのもその一例)

　冒頭のチャプター1は,恐らくエディターのW1HDQ自身が書いたものと思われますが、黎明期から戦前～終戦直後のトピックスについて、時代の当事者・目撃者として活き活きと記述しており、W6SAIのハンドブック同様 貴重な歴史記録となっています。伝説のあのサイクル19より前の、サイクル17～18の時代の話がメインですから、特に50MHzのDXファンには必読の一文かもしれません。

The ARRL's VHF manual was a kind of bible for homebrew amateurs who wanted to enhance their VHF activities. It is systematically edited with articles that appeared in QST magazine, with updates in 1968 and 1972. Reading it back now, I could sense the advances in technology and the changing times.

The first chapter, probably written by editor W1HDQ himself, vividly describes topics from the dawn of the war to the prewar and postwar periods, as a person who was involved in and an eyewitness to those times. Like the W6SAI handbook, it is a valuable historical record. Since the story is mainly about the days of Cycle 17-18, before the legendary Cycle 19, this may be a must-read, especially for 50MHz DX enthusiasts.
